YOGA CLASS FAQ

I'm not flexible. Can I practice yoga?

Yes. If you can breathe, you can practice yoga. Yoga can help you improve your flexibility, as long as you practice it safely and listen to your body. Many yoga practitioners were not flexible when they began their yoga asana practice. With time, flexibility builds.

I have never taken a yoga class before. Where should I start?

I suggest starting with a beginner’s series, or classes that are designated as level one. Let your instructor know that you are new, so they may give you the guidance you need. Some studio classes might not be tailored for beginners. My advice is to do what you can, rest when you need to, and be mindful of safety. My chair yoga classes, for example, have first-time participants on a regular basis. Many of them are still practicing yoga today. I specialize in safely and comfortably guiding beginners along with people who have yoga experience.

What should I wear to a yoga class? Should I eat before class?

Comfortable, breathable exercise clothing, such as leggings, long shorts, a tank top or T shirt are appropriate. Yoga is traditionally practiced barefoot, but some locations, such as libraries and SilverSneakers classrooms, require shoes. Avoid short-shorts or loose running shorts. You will probably be bending over, so take that into account when choosing your clothing. A towel can help to wipe your face, and also as a prop. For mat classes, many studios have loaner mats, but you may want to invest in your own for hygienic reasons. Plus, you can continue your practice at home!

It is best to avoid having a heavy meal in the 2 hours before your class. You will be moving your body in new ways, and that could make a full stomach uncomfortable. Nutritious snacks can help sustain you. Bring water with you, and keep hydrated!

Will practicing yoga interfere with my religious beliefs?

The meaning of yoga is union, roughly translated. It helps to unite the mind, body, and spirit. It is a practice and an inquiry, not a religion. You may even find that practicing yoga can enhance your existing spiritual practice.

What if I can't do all the poses?

That’s okay, and normal! The goal is to adapt the pose to the person, not the person to the pose. Props, modifications, and variations can be used in many ways. Your instructor can help you. Listen to your body. Yoga should never be painful. It is not an acrobatic competition. It is okay to just breathe while seated, or in child’s pose. My goal for all of my classes is to be as inclusive and adaptable as possible.
